Ortner’s Syndrome

  • Ortner’s syndrome, also known as cardiovocal syndrome, is a condition with hoarseness due to a left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy secondary to a cardiovascular disorder.12
    • Left recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy is usually caused by compression of the nerve between the thoracic aorta and the pulmonary arteries, due to left atrial dilation.
    • Causes of Ortner’s syndrome would include mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, severe pulmonary hypertension, or congenital heart diseases.
