Benjamin-Inglis Classification of Laryngeal Clefts

  • The Benjamin-Inglis Classification is used to classify laryngeal clefts.
  • Benjamin and Inglis divided laryngeal clefts into 4 types:1
    1. Type 1: an interarytenoid cleft extending up to, but not beyond the level of the true vocal folds.
    2. Type 2: cleft extending into the cricoid cartilage.
    3. Type 3: cleft extending beyond the cricoid cartilage into the cervical trachea.
    4. Type 4: cleft extending beyond the thoracic inlet to involve the thoracic trachea.
  • Laryngeal clefts are associated with the VACTERL/VATER association, Opitz G/BBB syndrome, and Pallister Hall syndrome.
